BdOSN published Bangla scratch book for easy programming education of children

Bangladesh Open Source Network (BdOSN) has published a book titled "Scratch Programming for Kids" with the aim of facilitating programming practice among students from the early stages of education. This book was published as part of a five-month project called “Scratch for Tech Advancement” organized by Bangladesh Open Source Network under the auspices of EMK Center . Eminent writer and educationist Dr. Muhammad Zafar Iqbal, Managing Director of Computer Services Limited, Mamluk Chabir Ahmed, General Secretary of BdOSN, Munir Hasan, Associate Professor of Institute of Information Technology, Dhaka University Dr. BM Mainul Hossain, AKM Tariqul Islam Roni, publisher of Tamralipi Prakashani and others were present in the program. This book was originally published to introduce programming languages ​​to children in an understandable way. Through this book, students can get familiar with programming in a fun way, as well as teachers can also take the help of this book to make their educational programs more enjoyable and easy to understand. One of the few skills that skilled manpower will need to tackle the Fourth Industrial Revolution is programming. Children who are skilled in logical thinking and technological problem solving will represent the world of the future. And for this reason, the Bangladesh government has included programming education from the initial stage of the education system. But in that sense, primary teachers have not yet received the necessary training to teach students ICT. BdOSN has been conducting this five-month project with 22 IT teachers from a total of 22 primary schools in several areas of the country including Dhaka to support the government's target to introduce coding programs to students of 3rd-5th grade. During the project period these teachers were trained on Scratch programming and a manual was developed through a two-day residential camp. Using this manual, faculty members teach students on Scratch programming in their respective institutes and later evaluate their experience through a one-day residential camp. The manual is revised and finalized. About 1017 students from 22 institutes got idea about Scratch programming under this project. At the Book Publishing Festival, teachers shared their experiences of teaching Scratch in the classroom. Ratan Kumar Basak, assistant teacher of Tetulia Model Government Primary School, Panchagarh, said, “Through this project, I learned scratch programming by drawing blocks for the first time and taught it to students back at school. Seeing their interest, I added Scratch classes to the school's daily routine”. Sadman, a student of the same school, said, “I learned scratch programming along with studying at home. I now enjoy creating different games with it more than playing games. Mahbubul Alam, Assistant Teacher of Hatirdia Government Primary School from Narsingdi, said, "I brought a multimedia projector from the neighboring school and taught my students, "The device crisis is a big problem for us." Ronak Afroza, an assistant teacher at Haji Sadar Ali Government Primary School from Mymensingh said, “Children already love to play with devices. We need the cooperation of parents and policy makers to harness this interest and introduce them to this new skill”. Dr. Muhammad Zafar Iqbal said, I am very happy that BdOSN has chosen our children's childhood to build their programming skills. Logical thinking from school level will develop them as problem solvers. Today is a very happy day for us that we now have all the tools to build the platform that third graders need to teach programming. Today's published book titled “Scratch Programming for Kids” will be very helpful for kids. This book, published in collaboration with EMK Center and the initiative of Bangladesh Open Source Network, will be helpful for programming education in other primary schools of the country and will remove the fear of programming among primary students of all levels of the country and make them interested in solving complex problems. The publication of the book marks the end of a five-month project through which teachers and students of other institutions in the country will also get the benefit of familiarizing themselves with the programming language.
